CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) is the rate at which an investment would have grown if it had grown at a steady annual rate — essentially the smoothed-out average growth rate over a period. It is the single most important metric for comparing investment performance across different time periods and asset classes.
Unlike simple average returns, CAGR accounts for compounding. If a mutual fund returned +50% in year 1 and −25% in year 2, the simple average is +12.5%, but the CAGR is actually +6.07% — reflecting the true return on investment.
Example: ₹1 lakh invested in 2019, now worth ₹2.5 lakh in 2024 (5 years). CAGR = (2,50,000 / 1,00,000)^(1/5) − 1 = 2.5^0.2 − 1 = 20.11% p.a.
